This section focuses on unissued designs and alternate trial versions of the paper money of Cambodia.
Cambodia, 1955+
Right: Banque Nationale du Cambodge; an obverse and reverse mostly hand drawn composite essay on card for 20 Riels, ND 1955. Bradbury, Wilkinson & Company, England. This became the 20 Riels of 1956 (SCWPM P5). The most significant differences to the issued note is to be found on the front. The two arched panels are wider, the guilloche beneath the signatures is completely different, as are the flanking plants in the left hand arch. Below: a colour trial of the finished design |
Right: Banque Nationale du Cambodge; an obverse composite essay on card for 5 Riels, ND 1955, depicting a Bayon head, Angkor Thom. This appears to be an essay produced in the development of the issued 1955 5 Kip (SCWPM P2), though the vignette of the Bayon stone face used is that which appears on the similar red 1962 issue of the 5 Kip (SCWPM P10). |
Right: An obverse and reverse composite essay for the Banque Nationale du Cambodge, of a 100 Riels, ND (1970s). Either an unrealised predecessor or an alternative design for the issued 100 Riels of 1972/1973 (SCWPM P 15). Below: A part hand painted essay of a proposed issue for 500 riels (1970s). Either an unrealised predecessor or an alternative design for the issued 500 Riels of 1972/1973 (SCWPM P 16). |
Right: A specimen of the completed and corrected design for the 1000 Riels, ND '1972' (SCWPM 17). The notations on the margins of this example demonstrates that the notes were not printed for issue until sometime after July 1974. This specimen carries a signature combination not found on the printed notes.
These notes were unissued due to the fall of the Khmer Republic. |
