梁汝成, a signature found on a 5 Yuan of 1914 (branch unknown

5 yuan - 伍圓

Five yuan of the National Coinage of the Republic of China. October 1st 1914.

The front vignette image was selected from a stock of multi-purpose engravings created by the ABNC and not created specifically for these notes. This station scene was probably based on photographs taken in the United States, c1900. In 1906 a full version of this vignette was used on a railroad bond.

(front) steam train passing through station - possibly in New York. (back) Chinese Government Post Office in Shanghai;
the predecessor to the current main post office building located in what was then the International Settlement. The current structure dates from 1924. The ABNco codes for this vignette: SPECIAL C - 1854, V 43449

Right: a c1920 photo of postmen outside the pre-1924 Shanghai post office building, of which very few photos appear to survive. Built in 1907 and occupied by the Shanghai Post Office until 1924 when it moved into larger premises newly built on North Soochow Road.

There are seven known colour varieties:

Picture
Above: the Chinese Government Post Office depicted on the 5 yuan can be seen lurking in the background of this c1900s image

Picture

Black/Grey - Dark Blue - Dark Green (all with red-green underprint) (as example right).
Some known with control overprints. Other branches and signatures, and signature combinations other than those listed below are likely. There is no signature information available at all for many branch issues. Some are only known as specimens. Standard Catalog of World Paper Money (SCWPM) codes are given - many are unlisted. They are almost always found in poor condition. Many examples have been altered during their circulating period to disguise their original branch of issue (for example, Hankow altered to Shanghai - sometimes only the Chinese name and not the English name is altered)

Serials, red.
Prefix: A, B, C, D, F, G
