The Japanese Occupation of the 'P' Philippines   (updated August 12 2016)
Section 2 1943-45

Back to the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines Section 1 1942-1943

The Money (cont.)

'1943-1945' (The Southern Development Bank issues)

The Japanese text which appears in the lower border of every banknote translates as "The Government of Great Imperial Japan". The small circular seal found nearby is of the Ministry of Finance.

Notes overprinted with 見本 (mi-hon) are specimens. Please see Japanese Philippines Section 1 (1942) for fuller details.

The majority of the 1943-45 notes have engraved face plates and full serial numbers (except the very final issues).

These notes are often found with various overprints of JAPWANCAP including
"THE JAPANESE WAR NOTES CLAIMANTS RECEIVED FOR SAFEKEEPING ASSOCIATION OF THE PHILIPPINES, INC."

Various propaganda overprints are known such as "The Co-Prosperity Sphere, What is it Worth?" Not all of these and similar overprints are genuine.

Jose Rizal Monument series (1943-1944)

The monument and mausoleum was constructed to commemorate the executed Filipino nationalist and revolutionary, Jose Rizal, and completed in 1913, on the site of his death in 1896. The structure stands in what is now Rizal Park in Manila. The design was initially widely criticized, though accepted over time.

As with other Japanese occupation issues errors are a frequent occurrence. These can be interesting but unlike with most paper money do not add value to the note due to the quantity of such notes - unless the error is very significant.

1945 emergency issues

These may have been an 'unauthorised' issue. Printed at Baguio after the capture of Manila by U.S. troops. The block serials incorporated as part of the plate are an indicator of the hurried nature of the production of these notes.
